Songfacts®:

  • This quiet song is sung by UK actress Emily Blunt, who plays the titular character in the 2018 movie Mary Poppins Returns. She sings the tune to the children after they wake up from what they believe is a bad dream. Mary consoles them that their late mother is still "waiting in the place where lost things go."
  • The song was written by composer-songwriter Marc Shaiman and his frequent Broadway collaborator Scott Whitman. It is one of nine original songs they penned for the Rob Marshall-directed film.

"Scott remembered that. We knew from working with Rob [Marshall] and screenwriter David Magee the importance of this moment," Shaiman told Billboard. "How do you sing to children about the loss of their mother and still soothe them? We came up with that title, and it all made sense."
  • In 2019, Bette Midler performed this at the Oscars, where it was nominated for Best Original Song (it lost to "Shallow" from A Star Is Born).
