Songfacts®:

  • Godzilla is a fictional sea monster of the Japanese cinema. Awakened by H-bomb tests and empowered by nuclear radiation, it wreaks havoc throughout Tokyo. During his three verses, Eminem likens his destructive tendencies to various beasts, including the aforementioned Godzilla.

I can swallow a bottle of alcohol and I'll feel like Godzilla
Better hit the deck like the card dealer

Mathers compares his vicious behavior when drunk to the way Godzilla destroys everything in its path. In reality, he's been sober since 2008.
  • Eminem displays his speed rapping on the third verse. It takes him 31 seconds to get through the verse during which he raps 224 words containing 330 total syllables. That's 10.65 syllables per second and 7.23 words per second: This is much faster than Em's words-per-second Guinness World Record that he set on 2013's "Rap God," where he spat 6.46 words per second.

The verse also outpaces Eminem's feature on Nicki Minaj's "Majesty" when he rapped 123 syllables in about 12 seconds, which is approx. 10.3 syllables per second.
  • The track features the late Juice WRLD on the hook, during which he channels the song's "monster" theme. The track was the rapper's first posthumous release since his death on December 8, 2019. Juice sadly passed away before being able to do a verse to go with his hook.
  • The bouncy cut is one of three on Music to Be Murdered By co-produced by DA Doman, the other two being "Those Kinda Nights" and "No Regrets." The Chicago native's other credits include Chris Brown's "Privacy," Tyga's "Taste," and Kodak Black's "Zeze."
  • After releasing the track, Eminem launched the #GodzillaChallenge, inspiring fans to attempt to replicate his rapid-fire flow on the tune.
  • The music video, directed by Juice WRLD's frequent collaborator Cole Bennett, features a dedication to the late rapper at the end. Set in a Costco-like supermarket, the clip also includes cameos from Mike Tyson (as a customer) and Dr. Dre (naturally, as a doctor).
  • DA Doman's contribution came about as a result of Def Jam executive vice president Steven Victor telling him Eminem wanted some beats. He put together a couple of packs and Em picked out three of them for the album.
  • "Godzilla" debuted at the top of the UK singles chart. This made Juice WRLD the first artist to claim a posthumous #1 UK single since Eva Cassidy, whose 2007 duet with Katie Melua, "What A Wonderful World," topped the chart.
