Songfacts®:

  • This was the lead single from Relapse, Eminem's first album for four and a half years.
  • The song was produced by Dr. Dre. He and 50 Cent make cameo appearances in the music video.
  • The song namedrops a number of female celebrities, including Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, Lindsay Lohan, Sarah Palin, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson and Amy Winehouse.
  • The Joseph Kahn-directed promo, which was filmed in Las Vegas, was the first video that Eminem had done for a song in five years. Like other Eminem clips, such as the ones for "Just Lose It" and "My Name Is," the promo pokes fun at various celebrities, basically the ones referenced in the lyrics. In a clip obtained by MTV News from the video set, Eminem warned: "I wanna say it's not necessarily intentional bashing in it, it's not necessarily taking deliberate shots at people... Yes, it is. What the f--- am I talking about?"
  • Even though Eminem sarcastically claims this song features a contribution from Jessica Simpson, it is in fact an uncredited vocal from soul singer Charmagne Tripp on the chorus.
  • This entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #9, earning Eminem the highest placed debut of his career. The rapper's previous best bow was the #12 arrival of "You Don't Know" in December 2006.
  • One of the celebrities that Eminem disses on the video is Jessica Simpson. However the rapper explained to Detroit's Metro Times that he held back from being too cruel about the singer's weight gain as he is a Cowboys fan and he didn't want to upset Simpson's boyfriend, Dallas quarterback Tony Romo. Said Slim Shady: "I've always wanted people to be able to look back at each video and go, 'Oh, remember what was going on at that moment?' You know what I mean? 'Oh, that's when Jessica Simpson got fat. Oh, OK!' And even if she gets thin again, that's fine. But for that moment in time, she was fat. But then I started thinking, like, 'Man!' I was telling [manager] Paul [Rosenberg] and everyone around me, 'Man, I don't wanna piss Tony Romo off and he starts throwing games for the Cowboys!'"
  • Connecticut producer Doc Ish supplied the beat including Charmagne Tripp's hook. Originally D12 member Bizarre picked the record up. However when Bizarre called Doc Ish to inform him that Eminem wanted to use his beat, the Connecticut producer didn't believe him. He explained to MTV News: "He called me at a bad time, so when he was like, 'Marshall wants the record,' I was like, 'Yeah, right.' He was like, 'No, seriously, I'm not playing.' And Bizarre is a comical dude, so it's hard to know if he's playing or not. I didn't have time that day; I was busy mixing a record for Saigon. So I basically hung up on him. So he called me back with his cousin, Gambino, from Hartford, and he's who I know Biz through. And [Gambino] was like, 'Ish, he's for real, he's not playing.' So they put me in touch with [Eminem's] management. I was still like, 'OK,' 'cause Bizarre plays jokes on people. But within five minutes, his management called, and they said they wanted the song. I believed in that song, but I didn't know it would make it to where it did."
  • In an interview with Complex Magazine, it was suggested that the song didn't fully connect as Relapse's lead single. Eminem replied: "Yeah, looking back on it now I don't know if that was 100 percent the way to go. I kind of liked the way the beat felt like it was slower in the chorus and then it sped up for the verses, but stepping back and looking at it as an average consumer or somebody who goes to a club, it might have been hard to figure out what the hell was going on in the song. On the other hand, it was the only option we had and the album might not even be out now if we hadn't found a song that was clean enough for radio. But am I going to go in that direction again? Probably not."
