Songfacts®:

  • This lilting waltz is the title track of Emmylou Harris' 27th studio album. The LP is a collection of duets with Rodney Crowell, who was a rhythm guitarist in her Hot Band in the mid-'70s. After he left, he continued contributing songs to her records. "I first heard Rodney on a demo tape in 1974 and knew immediately from his voice and lyrics he had the right stuff," Emmylou explained. "We met soon after, becoming bandmates in the Hot Band and starting a friendship that has continued and grown over the years. I always hoped we would someday do this record, and now I can finally cross it off my bucket list!"
  • This song is one of three on the album penned by Hank DeVito, another original member of the Hot Band.
  • Old Yellow Moon debuted at #4 on the Country album chart, a career-high placing for Crowell. His previous best had been the #8 peak for his 1989 set, Diamonds & Dirt.
