Songfacts®:

  • Enrique Iglesias has a message for his girl in this song:

You can run, you can hide
But you can't escape my love

Most guys would come off very stalker if they tried this, but Iglesias makes it romantic, a plea to keep working on their relationship because his love is pure.
  • Iglesias wrote the song with three experienced writers: Kara DioGuardi, Steve Morales (who also produced it) and David Siegel - the four of them wrote most of the songs on the album. The song came together after they had been laboring in the studio for about six months trying to finish the album. Iglesias and DioGuardi went to the parking lot to take a break and eat some donuts, when Morales played them the track.

"Immediately Kara and I, just perfectly in sync, sang the melody," Iglesias told People. "We started writing the lyrics, and I'm not exaggerating: We probably did it in 10 minutes. It was that fast. We wrote it in the parking lot with the chorus, with the verse."

DioGuardi later became a judge on American Idol.
  • The music video, directed by Dave Meyers, stars the Russian pro tennis player Anna Kournikova, who was one of the top internet searches at the time, but not for her tennis. She plays Enrique Iglesias' love interest. We see the pair have a spat but then make up very publicly, getting caught by authorities during intimate moments in a bathroom and in a car.

The chemistry was real: Kournikova and Iglesias started dating soon after and partnered. They keep details under wraps, but we know they had three kids together and remain committed.

By the way, Kournikova isn't the only tennis sensation to star in a video for a super-famous Latin singer. Look for Rafael Nadal in Shakira's video for "Gypsy."
  • "Escape" is the title track to Iglesias' fifth album, his second with most of the songs in English. It was the second single, following the ballad "Hero." It's his most popular album, selling over 3 million copies in America and many more around the world.
  • Iglesias released a popular version of the song in Spanish titled "Escapar."
