Songfacts®:

  • This is a track from Erasure's debut album Wonderland, which their lead singer Andy Bell revealed to NME in 1986, started off as a song about a social disease. Said Bell: "Sometimes Vince (Clarke) might be a bit stick-in-the-mud about the lyrics. Like 'Love Is A Loser'. I thought, let's write a song about VD, and I started making up all these verses. Then Vince and me thought, oh no you can't do that, so we rewrote it between us."

Bell brought very heartfelt lyrics to the beats of Vince Clarke, who was a founding member of Depeche Mode and Yazoo before teaming up with Bell. Clarke told us in 2010: "I spend most of my time working with Andy, and in him I've found somebody that I feel incredibly comfortable with, who I could have married." Don't take this literally: while Bell is openly gay, Clarke is married to a woman.
