Songfacts®:

  • Seated on a leather chair in a wood-paneled room, Eric Church premiered this song as part of the April 5, 2020 ACM Presents: Our Country television special. The CBS show featured a number of stars performing from their homes during the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The song's message of perseverance against all obstacles was a relevant one for the COVID-19 era; a time when people were struggling physically, mentally and emotionally.

Go on and get born heart
And let your mama keep you warm heart
    It's okay to cry
    But don't never break heart
  • Church introduced the song before his Our Country performance by saying: "The hardest thing about this for me as a dad, as a husband, as a business leader, as a citizen, has been the unknown. I believe we fear the unknown. And after some thought and a lot of prayer, here's what I know - I have hope and you should have hope, because since the beginning of time, people have gathered. They've gathered for fellowship, they've gathered for worship, they've gathered for prayer, they've gathered for song, they've gathered for communion, they've gathered for grief- but they've gathered, and we will gather again. The important thing to remember is to not fear, but to be brave, and endure."
  • Don't let fear steal your brave heart
Don't let doubt take your faith heart
It's OK to cry, but don't never break heart

The bluegrass-leaning song's message of resilience and hope was timely for the COVID-era, but when Church penned the tune with Luke Dick in rural North Carolina during the early months of 2020 they did not know the world was about to change drastically.
