Songfacts®:

  • In January 2020, Eric Church, his go-to producer Jay Joyce, and a team of songwriters and musicians headed to one of his favorite restaurants, Artisanal. Church had long admired the acoustics of the largely wood building in Banner Elk, North Carolina, and they turned it into a makeshift studio for a 28-day recording stint. After transforming it into a workable space, the country star and his team set out to come up with 28 songs - one track a day. This ode to rock music is one of the tunes that came out of these sessions.
  • This song was birthed on Church's day off - a day when he attempted to reset and spend some time with his family in their nearby place in Banner Elk. That night he settled down with his wife and a glass of wine to watch the Rocketman Elton John biopic.

In the first part of the movie, there's a scene where Elton John is in rehab, and the English pop star stands up and says, "I was however many years old when rock 'n' roll found me." As soon as Church heard it, he asked his wife to pause the movie, picked up his guitar, went to the kitchen and wrote "Rock & Roll Found Me."

Shortly afterwards, Church completed the song with one of his songwriting partners, Casey Beathard, and guitarist Driver Williams.
  • Church has spoken in the past of how rock bands such as Metallica and AC/DC have influenced his country-rock music. He's also sung of his love for rock and roll music on the The Outsiders song "That's Damn Rock & Roll" and the Desperate Man track, "Hippie Radio."
