Songfacts®:

  • This sober reflection on lessons learned and wisdom gained was written by Church with Jeff Hyde, Clint Daniels and Bobby Pinson. It finds the singer dispensing line after line of hard-won advice.

    Beer don't keep
    Love's not cheap
    And trucks don't wreck themselves
    Mama ain't a shrink
    Daddy ain't a bank
And God ain't a wishin' well

Church goes on to say he's learned these valuable teachings both by bitter experience and through the written word.
  • The song almost didn't make Desperate Man album, but with the encouragement of his wife, Katherine, Church decided to cut it at the last minute. He recalled:

"I was playing the album for a dear friend of ours, and my wife was with me… This person loved the album, but my wife said, 'But let me play you what didn't make it.' The first thing she played was 'Some of It.' And I hadn't listened to it in a while, and it was always a favorite song of mine. It's why it was the first one we took in, and I listened to it that night and I'm like…I'm gonna regret if I don't record this song,"

So Church called his manager that night. He told him even though the record was essentially done, "I gotta do this. I gotta cut this song."
  • Bobby Pinson told The Boot that he, Jeff Hyde and Clint Daniel set out to write "an emotional song that wasn't about a particular emotion, it was just about particular vignettes that would cause an emotion in somebody."

About halfway through, they decided it was the sort of thing Eric Church would say. They called him in and he helped them complete the track.
