Songfacts®:

  • Here, Nashville singer-songwriter Ernest K. Smith duets with country star Morgan Wallen. Ernest is a frequent Wallen collaborator, co-writing 11 tracks on his Dangerous album, including "More Than My Hometown" and "Wasted On You," as well as his collaboration with Lil Durk, "Broadway Girls."
  • The song finds Smith and Wallen admitting to regularly messing up their relationship. Whenever things get bad between them and their sweethearts, the singers trot down to the flower shop, hoping a gift of fresh violets and roses will fix their recurring mistakes. Because of their bad behavior, they need "one million" flowers to rectify the romantic damage.
  • John Daly sparked the idea for "Flower Shops." A conversation with the PGA golfer over drinks at Old Hickory in Nashville prompted Smith to dig out some George Jones tunes. He shared some of the old-world country great's songs with co-writers Ben Burgess and Mark Hollman. One of them, "A Good Year For The Roses," grabbed their attention. They decided to write a similar track about how a bad day for love means a good day for flower shops.

"It's a sad song with a wink; an honest song about messing up a good thing and running out of sorrys," said Ernest. "I wrote it with Ben Burgess and Mark Holman after being on a George Jones/sad country song kick. I didn't have a hard time going there because I know damn well what it's like to run out of apologies, and though flowers aren't ever going to fix it, it's just about all you can do sometimes."
  • Wallen first performed the song during an early August 2021 gig. "Well, y'all prolly know this already, but I love singing sad songs," he told the audience. "It don't matter if I'm the happiest person in the world, I just love riding around listening to sad songs. That's what I'ma sing tonight."
  • Big Loud records released "Flower Shops" as single on December 31, 2021.
  • Big Loud co-founder Joey Moi produced the track. The Canadian is a regular Wallen collaborator, including his hit singles "Whiskey Glasses," "More Than My Hometown," and "7 Summers."
