Songfacts®:

  • Erykah Badu and André 3000 (aka André Benjamin) dated one another for several years in the mid-'90s and had a son together, Seven Sirius Benjamin. The hit Outkast single "Ms. Jackson" was based on André relationship with Badu after their split.

This song features André 3000. While Badu contributed towards OutKast's "Humble Mumble" and "Liberation," this is the first time she's collaborated with her ex-beau on his own.
  • Not to be mistaken for Adele's 2015 comeback single, or Lionel Ritchie's 1983 hit, the lyrics actually sample the Isley Brothers' version of Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me."
  • The mixtape title But U Cain't Use My Phone is actually taken from Badu's 1997 single "Tyrone." That song was about a disrespectful boyfriend whose male pals (mainly Tyrone) came above her in the relationship. In it she tells her annoying guy to "Call Tyrone" to help him pick up his stuff before adding, "but you can't use my phone." Fans assumed the song was about Andre 3000, but it wasn't in fact about anyone in particular. Badu literally freestyled the words on stage in London.
