Songfacts®:

  • This was produced by Patrick Douthit, who goes by the name of 9th Wonder. He is best known for his work with the hip-hop group Little Brother.
  • Erykah Badu: "We chose 'Honey' as the single because of its appeal as far as it feels good. It's a 9th Wonder track and 9th Wonder is a wizard when it comes to the drums and the bass. It's about a lover whom I'm chasing by the name of Slim who I think is sweet, so sweet sugar got a long way to catch him."
  • The video was a tribute to classic R&B and hip-hop acts such as Diana Ross, De La Soul, and Earth, Wind & Fire. It was directed by Erykah and Chris Robinson. In 2003 the duo won BET's Video of the Year Award for the "Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)" promo.
  • Badu explained at a press conference to launch the album that the original name, "Kabbah," was simply a working title. "I named this album 'Nu AmErykah' because I'm dealing with whatever is to come instead of what was. In taking on a project like this, I'm taking the responsibility to talk for my race and my planet. I'm sure the record company will make their money and they've given me the blessing of time."
  • Badu told Billboard magazine that the album was inspired by her two children and the direction of contemporary American culture. "The first half of the album speaks to my creative interpretation of Francis Ford Coppola's Koyaanisqatsi, (a 1982 movie consisting of images of American cities and natural landscapes) and the second half is more traditional."
