Eve

Eve Artistfacts

  • 1979-
  • Born and raised in Philadelphia, Eve became the first woman signed to the Ruff Ryders label after impressing them with her freestyles at an audition - DMX called her "a pitbull in a skirt" (high praise). She became an integral part of that crew, appearing on their #1 compilation album Ruff Ryders Ryde or Die Vol. 1 in 1999 a few months before releasing her first solo album.
  • Her acting debut was in a series of 1999 Sprite commercials based on the kung fu movie Five Deadly Venoms. She always had acting ambitions, and soon moved into movies, appearing in XXX and Barbershop in 2002. In 2003, she got her own sitcom on the UPN network in 2003 called Eve, where she played a fashion designer, not a rapper. It ran for three seasons.
  • In 1999, before her debut album was released, Prince called on Eve to record a rap for his song "Hot With U," which appears on his Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic album.
  • She has paw prints tattooed just above her breasts, which she got on a dare before her rap career started. When asked about them, she said they symbolize how she was "the bitch of my litter."
  • She was originally signed to Dr. Dre's Aftermath label, before being signed by Ruff Ryders. She released one single on the label, "Eve of Destruction," which Dre produced. It appeared on the soundtrack to the movie Bulworth in 1998, but the label lost interest in her and didn't release any more of her material. Apparently, there were no hard feelings: Dre co-produced Eve's 2001 hit "Let Me Blow Ya Mind."
  • Eve was a singer before she became a rapper. When she was young, she had a 5-piece group called "Dope Girl Posse." From a young age, she also wrote poetry and short stories, which helped her become a strong lyricist.
  • Her childhood nickname was Miss Poo-a-doo. It came from her mother.
  • She attended Martin Luther King High in Philadelphia. In the tenth grade, she formed a group called EDJP (pronounced Egypt).
  • Eve is financially savvy, owning stocks and other investments. She was the first woman in her family to own a house.
  • She spent some time as a stripper, which she mentions in the song "Heaven Only Knows" from her debut album ("Went from dancing on tabletops to making labels pop"). This made a good talking point as part of her come-up, but it got frustrating for Eve when journalists would mention it years later after she was established.
  • Eve is convinced that she would have been a make-up artist if she didn't pursue music.
  • Her first album, Ruff Ryders' First Lady, debuted at #1 in America, making Eve just the third female rapper with a #1 album, following Lauryn Hill and Foxy Brown.
  • She married a British guy, Maximillion Cooper, in 2014, and moved to London with him. They welcomed their first child, son Wilde, in 2022.
