Songfacts®:

  • The Little Rascals had the He-Man Woman Haters Club, whose charter stipulates that no man is to be seen with girls, and interacting with them is forbidden. This song plays on that phrase to describe a conflicted relationship with women: the singer loves to hate them and hates to love them.

The song fits into the concept of the Pornograffitti album and is from the perspective of the main character, Francis, a young man whose raging hormones lead him on a journey of self-discovery. By the time we get to this song, he's hella frustrated but starting to understand his feelings.

"It's sung in a campy style, but it was Francis - the kid - trying to reconcile his past and some of the things that he did within the story when it came to sex, drugs, and rock n' roll," Extreme lead singer Gary Cherone explained in a Songfacts interview. "He tried to reconcile pushing away the woman that he truly loved and confusing it with some of the indiscretions he did on the road."
  • The song has a long guitar intro played by Dweezil Zappa, son of Frank Zappa. This section is called "Flight Of The Wounded Bumble Bee" and is based on the classical piece "Flight Of The Bumblebee."
  • Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt wrote the music for this song, showing off the classical influence in his work. Bettencourt is hailed as one of the great rock guitar players of his time, but he's also an adept composer and orchestrator. He played piano on some songs from the album and also did horn and orchestral arrangements.
  • Listeners who bought the Pornograffitti album after hearing the hit ballads "Hole Hearted" and "More Than Words" got quite a shock when they heard this song, which is much more typical of their sound. There was a huge disconnect between their hard rock roots and their hits, which they tried to accommodate by dividing their next album, III Sides To Every Story, into different sections for rock, acoustic and orchestral songs.
