Songfacts®:

  • "Lord Above" is part of Family Ties, a collaborative album between Fat Joe and record producer Dre of Cool & Dre fame. Dre is a long-term collaborator with the Terror Squad founder, having first made his name with his production work on his early 2000s albums Jealous Ones Still Envy and Loyalty.
  • Dre and Fat Joe spit the first two verses during which they look upon their careers, thanking God for their success and survival. Joey Crack gets especially introspective at the end of his verse when he talks about the inevitability of death and the need to make peace with his Maker.
  • Eminem takes the third verse, which contains his usual pun-laden malicious rhymes. However, it was some disses against Nick Cannon and Cannon's ex Mariah Carey that grabbed the attention of many.

Eminem has claimed he once had a relationship with Carey, dating her for six months back in 2001, though Carey denies the entire affair. Since then, he's been in an ongoing conflict with the songstress, starting with his 2002 track "Superman," where he rapped:

    What you trying be?
    My new wife?
    What, you Mariah?
    Fly through twice

After Carey married actor and radio host Nick Cannon in 2008, Em took further shots at both her and her husband. Now he's re-ignited the feud, which was likely in response to Nick Cannon speaking on T.I.'s podcast ExpediTIously, where he talked about his willingness to fight Eminem in defense of his wife. Shady responds by calling him "whipped" and "neutered" during his controversial bars.

Cannon reacted with a diss track "The Invitation," which features an intro from imprisoned Suge Knight calling out Em.
  • Mary J. Blige croons the hook, which links up with the underlying theme in the first two verses of gratitude towards the Almighty.
  • This is the second time Fat Joe has teamed up with Eminem and Mary J. Blige. Back in 2005, the Detroit rapper jumped on Terror Squad's "Lean Back (Remix)" with Lil Jon, and Mase. Seven years later, Blige featured on Fat Joe's "Another Round (remix)" along with Chris Brown, Fabolous and Kirko Bangz.
