Songfacts®:

  • Father John Misty originally wrote this bongo-laced, soft-rocker thinking about another artist. He told Q magazine: "I wrote 'Real Love Baby' with Lady Gaga in mind and ended up writing one of my most vulnerable songs. Writing for yourself is the best way to trick yourself in some unexpected way that isn't attached to your vanity."
  • The song plays throughout a 90-second, wordless commercial highlighting Discover LA's Everyone is Welcome tourism campaign. The ad features different Los Angeles neighborhoods that highlight the city's vibrant ethnic and gender diversity. Jeremy Bacharach, group creative director for Discover Los Angeles, told Billboard magazine that Father John Misty, agreed to the usage because the native Californian "believed in the message celebrating L.A.'s diversity and inclusivity, and extending a warm welcome to everyone around the world."
