Songfacts®:

  • This disco banger is a commentary on how society views the use of sanitary pads. Field Music reflect on how marketing for the products, created by men, often treats the concept of menstruation as something shameful.

Why should a woman feel ashamed?
    Why, why, why?

And the unfair tax on sanitary pads.

    What kind of civilization
    Has made the necessary
    Conditions for procreation
    A luxury?
    Only a man's, man's, mad, mad world

Field Music's Davis Brewis told Uncut magazine: "I found it pretty excruciating to show people the song for the first time - my wife and Liz from the band in particular - but I knew I was at least being honest. It's a song about a man's experience and about the lack of understanding that men, especially, have about periods."
  • The song is part of Making a New World, a concept album by Field Music about the aftereffects of World War I. David and Peter Brewis originally composed the songs for a project commissioned by the Imperial War Museum.
