Songfacts®:

  • This song was written by the FireHouse songwriting tandem of lead singer CJ Snare and guitarist Bill Leverty. Snare wrote the song about his wife-at-the-time, who turned out not to be his love of a lifetime - the couple later split. "I woke up at 5:00 in the morning and wrote that with her in mind," Snare said in our 2014 interview.
  • FireHouse was swimming upstream with this power ballad, since by 1995 the charts were dominated by R&B/hip-hop and melodic pop. Hair metal mainstays like Poison and Mötley Crüe had fallen out of favor along with their hit ballads. FireHouse extended their run with this song, however, which was the biggest hit from their third album. Their first two albums each contained big ballads that were very successful: "Love of a Lifetime" and "When I Look Into Your Eyes."
