Songfacts®:

  • Florence + the Machine originally recorded this song for their 2018 album High As Hope. It didn't make it onto the final tracklist, but when the coronavirus epidemic started spreading worldwide, frontwoman Florence Welch decided it was the right time to release the tune.
  • The lyrics are about a late night of partying that ends badly, leading to some major self-examination. Welch concludes that even when you're feeling depressed and tempted to hide away, you must fight on. We all have a role to play in being a "light of love" to others.
  • Welch felt the track's message was relevant to the challenges the world was facing in the COVID-19 era. "The song is about the world coming at you so fast and you feel like you won't survive it, but in actually bearing witness to the world as it is, it's really the only place you can be of service," the frontwoman said. "I found so many ways to numb myself out, to hide from the world, and although waking up from that was painful, it's never been more important not to look away, to keep an open heart even if it hurts, and to find ways to keep showing up for the people that need you. Even from a distance."
  • Florence Welch wrote and produced the song with Doveman and Emile Haynie. The same trio also penned the High As Hope tracks "Sky Full of Song," "Hunger" and "Patricia." Andrew Wyatt (Lady Gaga's "Shallow." Miley Cyrus' "Slide Away") also contributed to the writing of the song.
  • Welch is donating all her royalties from the song to the Intensive Care Society, who provide care and support to frontline NHS workers.
