Songfacts®:

  • "Sympathy Magic" finds Florence Welch doing what she does best: turning catastrophe into cathedral-sized catharsis. Written in the wake of her near-death experience during the Dance Fever tour in 2023 (when she suffered internal bleeding on stage), the track sees her picking through the wreckage of her body and spirit with the same wild-eyed grace she brought to "Shake It Out" and "What Kind Of Man." But this time, the fire feels closer.
  • Florence Welch often writes like she's summoning storms, but here she sounds like she's standing in the calm after one, bruised, barefoot, and blinking at the sunlight. Welch wrestles with trauma, self-doubt, and the uneasy process of recognizing yourself again after life has knocked you flat. Her Dog Days are definitely over, but they've left their teeth marks.
  • The song culminates in its powerful refrain:

So come on, tear me wide open
    A terrible gift
    Let the chorus console me
    Sympathy magic

Welch told Radio X she misheard the phrase "sympathetic magic" - a kind of folk belief that you can connect with another person through shared acts - as "sympathy magic."

The accident became inspiration. "That sort of feels better," she said. "That's what songs are, if they have a magic, it's about making a connection with someone."
  • Florence Welch wrote the song with Danny L. Harle, an electronic producer known for his work with experimental pop artists like Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek.

"Danny is in the dance world massively, but also like loves baroque and medieval music, so it was perfect and he's kind of an expert in those as well," said Welch. "And it was sort of the first time like Danny came to the studio like I told him about the record, I had played him some of the stuff that I was working on."

Harle surprised Welch by presenting an already-formed instrumental: "It blew me away immediately," she said. "It already just had this incredible imagery."

She added her own layers - live drums, live piano - and ended up hitting the drums so hard she broke a stick. The scream that closes the track is real, Welch confessed: "It actually hurt."
  • Welch and Harle produced the track alongside Aaron Dessner, known for his work on Taylor Swift's Folklore and Evermore. The combination of Dessner's sweeping orchestral arrangements and Harle's electronic textures created a distinctive sonic landscape.
  • Florence + The Machine debuted "Sympathy Magic" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 26, 2025. It was released the following day as the third single from Everybody Scream, an album created during a period of healing and personal discovery for Welch, after she underwent lifesaving surgery during 2023's Dance Fever Tour.
  • Directed by longtime collaborator Autumn de Wilde, the video features striking imagery of Florence and four backing dancers (known as "The Witch Choir": Lea Oroz, Aisling Tara, Jenna Anne Nathan, and Chihiro Kawasaki) dancing and writhing theatrically on grass and boulders. The visual maintains the witchy aesthetic and rural settings established on the "Everybody Scream" clip.
