Songfacts®:

  • "I Love My Country" is a rocking ode to life in rural America and the music Florida Georgia Line love to blast out loud. The duo released the country rocker as their lead single from their fifth album.

"This was one of the first songs we did for our upcoming project," the duo's Tyler Hubbard revealed to Esquire. "And it's just made us feel so good and gave us so much joy."
  • "I Love My Country" is loud and boisterous. A banjo figure threads through the track beneath electric guitars and heavy drum beats. "We've been craving the organic elements of what we do," said Hubbard. "We're taking it back to recording with a full band, and then having fun bringing in different programming. It feels like a cool hybrid of a really country feel with different elements of rock and hip-hop."
  • Florida Georgia Line didn't pen the song. The songwriters are:

Nashville songwriter Ernest K. Smith, who helped Florida Georgia Line write their previous single,
    "Blessings."

Charlie Handsome, a producer known for his work with artists from an assortment of genres. They include Khalid ("Better"), Travis Scott ("5% Tint") and Trevor Daniel ("Falling").

Corey Crowder, who is a member of Florida Georgia Line's Tree Vibez publishing company and frequent collaborator of Chris Young. He also co-penned Florida Georgia Line's similarly themed "Can't Say I Ain't Country."
  • The Canadian Joey Moi produced Florida Georgia Line's first four albums, helping the duo to develop their fusion of country and rock. However, Moi is not the producer on this song; Corey Crowder is. "We decided it was time to freshen up our sound," explained Hubbard.
  • Making this song reminded the FGL duo of their early days when making music was just fun. "Getting to produce this song with our boy Crowder brought a whole new excitement that we've probably never had," they told Apple Music. "We also felt lots of nostalgia throughout the process from the way this song took us back to 2012, 'Here's to the Good Times,' but even better."
  • Florida Georgia Line released the single on March 27, 2020, at a time when people worldwide were self-isolating from the coronavirus pandemic. "This song could not be more appropriate for a time like now," Hubbard said in a video. "We're all living in uncertain times or quarantined, not really sure what the future holds. But we're still loving life, still having a good time and this song really, really does that for us. It brings us so much joy and makes us feel so good, and we hope it does the same for you guys."
  • Some fans pointed out how similar this sounds to Kane Brown's 2018 track "Short Skirt Weather," which the singer wrote with Chase McGill and Will Weatherly. One person demonstrated this by uploading a mashup of both songs. The talk must have reached the ears of Florida Georgia Line's people, as two months after the release of "I Love My Country," Kane Brown, Chase McGill and Will Weatherly were added as co-writers.
  • The song's music video celebrates the country lifestyle. TikTok personalities such as BabyAriel, ImTheJay, Josh Killacky and Chelcie Lynn all take part in the clip, not to mention several of the band's real fans.
  • The FGL duo delivered an energetic version of the song at the 2020 ACM Awards. Hubbard scurried around the stage on a specially made combination of scooter and microphone stand, having suffered a broken ankle and ruptured Achilles tendon a few weeks previously in a dirt bike wreck.
