Songfacts®:

  • This R&B-influenced slow-jam was written by FGL's Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley with co-writers Nicole Clawson and Jordan Schmidt at Hubbard's farm late one fall.
  • The song was partially inspired by a 1987 Nitty Gritty Dirt Band hit tune.

"I had told Jordan to make kind of a modern day 'Fishin' in the Dark' track, and he showed up with that…" Brian Kelley recalled to ABC Radio.

"Nicole had the title for 'Smooth'…" he continued, "and I remember Tyler came in with that hook on the chorus, 'Good Lord Almighty'. And that kind of got us going down the chorus. We just wrote real hard that day and had a lot of fun."
  • The track was released as the fourth single from Florida Georgia Line's Dig Your Roots album. It also became the name of the band's summer 2017 Smooth Tour.
  • The video, which was co-directed by TK McKamy and Brian Kelley, references much of the song's lyrical content. It finds the FGL duo stuck on the side of the road after their truck breaks down. The pair are offered a ride in a pink Cadillac by an Elvis impersonator and a guy called "Cat Daddy" (played by songwriter Craig Wiseman).

The quartet head to Las Vegas, where they celebrate Cat Daddy's vow renewal ceremony (to Wiseman's real-life wife KK).

"We've learned a lot of dance moves, had a great time - TK and BK, they crushed it," Hubbard said. "It's been an amazing experience here in Vegas. It's been a party."
