  • This song stemmed from a demo vocalist Casey McPherson submitted (with the working title of "Daylight"). The band kept the verse feel and melody but pretty much re-wrote everything else.

    McPherson recalled in a Reddit AMA that it was intended to be "a song of redemption." He added: "We may not be able to control what happens to us, but we can control what we do about it."
  • The "Kayla" title was suggested at the vocal sessions and it got the thumbs up from producer Peter Collins. Keyboardist Neal Morse commented: "It seemed to work well with the concept we had going, kind of a spiritual love story thing."
