Songfacts®:

  • Dave Grohl said that he once had a dream that UFOs (aliens) had come to the earth, and a new age of man was beginning, and it inspired one of the songs on the album. While he didn't say which one, he did say that the lyrics were very spacy and general, which indicates it could be this "Floaty." >>

  • Following the death of Kurt Cobain in April 1994, Dave Grohl wasn't sure what to do next. Eventually, he decided to go into a studio and lay down some songs he'd written while still with Nirvana as a form of cathartic therapy. He booked six days at Seattle's Robert Lang Studios, located near his house, and recorded himself on vocals, guitars, bass and drums.

Grohl pressed just 100 LP records under the name Foo Fighters and then created 100 cassette copies. It was only after the tapes attracted record label interest that he signed with Capitol and recruited a full band to perform the songs live. Grohl recorded his compositions in the same order that became the album's track listing, and "Floaty" was the sixth track he laid down.
  • Grohl was insecure about his nasally singing; he added effects to his voice on this song and tried to enhance the performance through double track. "I think Michael Stipe once said that his sinuses were a God-given gift, and that's why his voice is so nasally and bizarre as it is," he told Melody Maker. "To me, it's more of a curse. I'd rather have them repaired so I can sing like Luciano Pavarotti."
