Songfacts®:

  • Foo Fighters' drummer Taylor Hawkins supplied the vocals on this retro scorcher, while a certain Paul McCartney filled in as stickman. Dave Grohl told UK newspaper The Sun:

"It's always nice when Taylor sings on a Foo Fighters record because it changes the sequence of the band. Taylor said I should play drums but we knew Paul was in town.

We've played together a few times and recorded together. Whenever he is in Los Angeles we get dinner and hang out. But our engineer Darrel - who had recorded with Paul before - said 'Oh you should get Paul to do the drums'.

A lot of people don't realize he has played the drums before and he's played on a bunch of Beatles songs."
  • McCartney laid down two takes on the drum kit; they used the first. Taylor Hawkins told ET Canada: "He hadn't even heard the song. He comes in and Dave picked up an acoustic (guitar) and showed him real quick. He sat on his special drum set that his tech set up for him. I sat there with a drumstick conducting. He did two takes."
  • The previous time McCartney linked up with the Foo Fighters frontman was to collaborate on some tunes from the soundtrack to Grohl's 2013 documentary, Sound City. The tunes they did included the jam "Cut Me Some Slack."
  • Taylor Hawkins also penned the words. He said on BBC 6 Music:

"The funny thing is Dave wrote the music and had a title for it, just a working title, so I just used that and then I just wrote the rest of the words around Sunday Rain."
