Songfacts®:

  • Frank Black had recently gone through a divorce when he wrote this song. His life was in storage both literally and metaphorically, as he was struggling with the transition.

"you get the s--t kicked out of you in a divorce," he told Barney Hoskyns. "The whole thing was kinda gut-wrenching. We had been together for, like, 16 years, so it's kind of a heavy time."
  • Black recorded the Honeycomb album in Nashville with Jon Tiven producing. Most of the musicians were a lot more seasoned than Black. Stax mainstay Steve Cropper played guitar, while Muscle Shoals stalwarts David Hood (bass), Spooner Oldham (keyboards) and Dan Penn (engineering) all contributed.

Black wrote "My Life Is In Storage" in his hotel room the night before they recorded it.
