Songfacts®:

  • Although this popular song was written in 1941, and appeared in the musical The Fleet's In the following year, it would be another 20 years before it really scored. Frank Ifield had been releasing singles since 1958, but it was not until 1962 that he broke through. His recording of "I Remember You" was the top UK single of the year ahead of "Stranger On The Shore" and many other songs instantly recognizable by musicologists. It was recorded May 27, 1962, and released on the Columbia label backed by "I Listen To My Heart."

There have been at least four reasonably well known songs with the same title, but this one was composed by Victor Schertzinger and written by Johnny Mercer. Mercer is said to have given it to Judy Garland, although she does not appear to have recorded it. There are at least 19 singles releases of the Ifield recording. >>>
