Songfacts®:

  • Much of Tape Deck Heart is about Frank Turner's stormy relationship with his ex-girlfriend and the reasons for their breakup. This song finds Turner singing straight from the heart as he tells us, "Darling, I can't look you in the eyes now and tell you that I'm sure if I love you anymore." He told Kerrang! "That's the hardest song on the record for me. I played it to a friend and she said it sounded 'heavier than Slayer.' That was a compliment – that's what it meant to be like. The difficult thing is that it's an extremely unkind song. Hopefully, the rest of the album brings in some other angles."
  • According to Turner, after his ex heard this song, she called him up and tore into him. He explained that the song is part of a story told throughout the album, and that smoothed things over a bit.
