Songfacts®:

  • Motown singer, writer and producer Frank Wilson originally recorded this as a demo in 1965. After Wilson decided he'd rather concentrate on songwriting and production work, Motown boss Berry Gordy had all the copies destroyed. Miraculously two copies of this song survived and one turned up in the north of England in the 1970s. It became a popular hit in the Northern Soul scene of that era and is often cited as the best record of that genre. In 1997, Scottish DJ and record collector Kenny Burrell bought one of the copies for a then-record price of £15,000. Twelve years later he sold it to an anonymous buyer for £25,742.
  • Wilson went on to achieve significant success writing hits for The Supremes ("Love Child," "Stoned Love") and The Temptations ("All I Need"). He is now a Christian minister and is also involved in the production of gospel music.
  • Frank Wilson passed away of lung infection complications on September 27, 2012 in a hospital in Duarte, Southern California aged 71.
  • Bruce Springsteen covered this for his 2022 album Only The Strong Survive. He billed the record as a collection of "15 soul music greats" that is firmly centered on singing.
