Songfacts®:

  • This song was composed by Freddie Mercury and the Italian electronic music producer/songwriter Giorgio Moroder for the soundtrack to the restored and tinted 1984 version of Fritz Lang's 1927 classic silent movie Metropolis. Mercury recorded a high-energy dance version of the song that featured all three of his Queen bandmates. Released as Freddie's first solo single it reached the Top 10 of the UK chart and also entered the Hot 100.
  • Prior to Queen embarking on their 2014 tour with lead singer Adam Lambert, Brian May proposed performing an acoustic ballad version of this song, which became one of the most memorable moments of the shows. The tune was reworked by May and Roger Taylor with Mercury's original vocals for their 2014 compilation album Queen Forever.
  • The song was used for the closing credits of the 1993 comedy crime film Loaded Weapon 1.
