Songfacts®:

  • Brooklyn five-piece Friends are an indie pop band comprising vocalist Samantha Urbani, bassist Lesley Hann, guitarist Nikki Shapiro, keyboardist Matthew Molnar and drummer Oliver Duncan. Urbani and Hann have known each other since primary school, and they both spent much of their childhoods in Mystic, Connecticut. The band was formed in September 2010 after Hann and Duncan took refuge at Urbani's apartment to escape a bedbug infestation and Molnar, who had heard some demos by Urbani and wanted to collaborate, joined them. Initially dubbing themselves Perpetual Crush, their first show was for Urbani's birthday party in her backyard after seven days of jamming together. Soon afterwards Shapiro joined the group, who after attracting interest with their catchy tunes got signed by the independent London-based label Lucky Number.
  • This song about having independence and confidence in relationships is their debut single. "It's a love song that is empowering rather than needy or self deprecating or angry," Urbani told The Independent. "I think a lot of people are really appreciating that and I'm glad because I think there needs to be more of that."
  • So why Friends? According to Hann, its because that's exactly what they are, and "there's something really cool about being literal." The name also refers to the band's relationship with their fans.
