  • The first single from the Sherman Oaks, California singer-songwriter Garrett Hazen, "Some Brutal Love" is "really about things I tend to get annoyed with either in myself or in other people around me," he says. He adds, "Whatever relationships are brought up in these songs are really much more of a metaphor for some sort of broader idea. At the end of the day I'm a guy who grew up with an awesome family and am happily married. So to say that these songs are about some deep internal conflict or some past heartbreak would be inauthentic. I think I'm just a guy who gets annoyed with himself sometimes."

  • Regarding the recording of this song, Hazen told Songfacts, "'Some Brutal Love' was recorded mostly in a bedroom with some other stuff being tracked in a studio that my producer Spencer Riley had the hookups with. The whole process really felt like starting with a blank slate. I had never really sung that much before and really didn't have a whole lot of songwriting experience, I just played guitar. Because of that most of the process really felt like me learning from Spencer and from messing around with different gear. We really tried to not lean on my guitar playing too much, so whatever cool things I contributed were probably like 80% luck."
