Songfacts®:

  • This Matador track finds Gaz Coombes nostalgically recalling his and his wife Jools' courtship in Oxford. Struggling to write the song, he asked Jools, a budding novelist, to contribute. "I gave her the basic idea of the song, and she came up with a few lines that helped glue the rest of it together," he told The Independent.

"I never really thought of asking her help in songwriting before," Coombes added smiling; "perhaps I should have."
  • The song finds Coombes recalling a spliff he and Jools shared in a car park when they first met. "It was the catalyst for everything that would follow," he told NME. "It was the beginning of the rest of our lives, and I thought that was really beautiful to pinpoint that."
  • Asked by The Guardian why he called the album Matador, Coombes replied: "At times we've all got to face a stampeding beast, one you have to dodge. I like it as a metaphor for the oddities of life. Plus, it's a good-sounding word."
