Songfacts®:

  • Written by Cole Porter, this is a song that is as notable for its choreography as for its musical content. It is performed in the 1948 film The Pirate by Gene Kelly; the song is introduced with a short monologue by Kelly, who continues as he is joined by two male dancers; all three are wearing pierrot hats.

It is also performed at the end by Kelly and Judy Garland dressed as clowns with makeup and wearing baggy trousers. Although this is a strong song, Kelly was one of the best dancers who ever graced the silver screen, so many will prefer his performance for the latter. >>>
