Songfacts®:

  • According to Brendan Ryan, who catalogued the works of the ukulele man for the George Formby Society, this is the only song that Formby wrote entirely by himself. Beryl, the performer's wife and manager, is said to have related that on an overnight journey to London for a recording session, he realized he was a song short, so knocked this up en route.
  • The Society's on-line discography says George recorded the song on March 4, 1938 for Regal Zonophone, so presumably he wrote it on the evening of March 3.
  • "I Blew A Little Blast On My Whistle" is a fair effort, very uptempo with a jazzy feel to it, delivered with the usual Formby humour, and of course as well as his de rigueur ukulele, George - or someone - chips in with a whistle. >>>
