Songfacts®:

  • According to The George Formby Society, this song - also known as "The Window Cleaner" - was recorded September 27, 1936 on the Regal Zonophone label and (an extract) was recorded the same day on Columbia.
The sheet music, by Fred E. Cliffe, Harry Gifford and Formby himself, was published with a photograph of Formby on the front cover and credited as featured in the film Keep Your Seats Please!

Although this was the first of Formby's window cleaning songs, it was not the last. And no, unlike Van Morrison, Formby never did work as a window cleaner. He started as an apprentice jockey, but after the death of his father - George Formby Senior - he trod the same path, and in fact started his stage career performing the same material. >>>
