Songfacts®:

  • The most noteworthy thing about this downtempo standard is that it is the last song ever written by Geoge Gershwin. The composer died in July 1937 from a brain tumor at the young age of 38, after which his lyricist, elder brother Ira, added words to the melody.
  • Like many Gershwin songs, this has been widely recorded, first appearing in the 1938 film The Goldwyn Follies, which of course Gershwin did not live to see. Herein it was sung by Kenny Baker (on a radio programme). Much later it was recorded by Eric Clapton (as "Our Love Is Here To Stay"). It was originally called "It's Here To Stay" but was published for the aforementioned film as "Love Is Here To Stay." >>>
