Songfacts®:

  • Before his passing on Christmas Day 2016, George Michael was working on a new album. This funky, upbeat track is the first song to be released from those sessions. The song debuted on Zoe Ball's BBC Radio 2 breakfast show on November 6, 2019.
  • Work on "This is How (We Want You to Get High)" began in early 2012 as a collaboration between George Michael and programmer James Jackman. The upbeat track was subsequently developed and recorded at Air Studios in London, before the finishing touches were added in late 2015 during the singer's final recording sessions.
  • George Michael's lyrics address society's ills with sardonic humor. The song's uplifting vibe and socially conscious message was deemed perfect to soundtrack the final scene of the Last Christmas movie. The festive rom-com has a soundtrack featuring 12 of Michael's solo tunes, including this new one, plus three Wham! tracks.
