Songfacts®:

  • According to a report in the black newspaper The Voice, March 2, 1988, self-taught songwriter Georgio was the success story of the year, on the West Coast of America at least. The paper said he had promoted the single himself and sold 9,000 copies in two days. Alas, there was more to this overnight success than someone let on. He gave a demo to Prince four years earlier, but this went nowhere. In 1987, the album Sex Appeal (spelt thus) was released on Motown. It didn't exactly set the world alight, and never made the top 100. "Sexappeal" is the first track, and runs to 4 minutes 33 seconds. >>>

  • There is an obvious Prince influence on this track, which makes sense considering Georgio is from Minneapolis. Like much of Prince's early work, the song is blatantly about sex, with a lascivious video to match.
