Songfacts®:

  • Marie Ulven is a Norwegian singer-songwriter who performs under the name Girl In Red. She set this romantic song amidst the blissful stages of a relationship with another girl. Ulven sings of falling in love with her in October and assures her sweetheart she's in it for the long haul.
  • Girl In Red wrote "We Fell in Love in October" in 2015, when she was in her mid-teens. It's the first song she wrote about her first lesbian romance. "I had broken up with my boyfriend and I'd been in this relationship with this girl and it's just me declaring my love for this girl," Ulven explained to Fader.
  • Girl In Red repeatedly screams "my girl" on the chorus. She explained that this was her owning the relationship as she "struggled a long time accepting it" and there was a lot of drama between the two.
  • Ulven wrote, produced, recorded and mixed the song herself.
  • Girl In Red released "We Fell in Love in October" as a double single as a single on November 21, 2018 with "Forget Her." It was her breakthrough song, charting in several European countries, including Czech Republic, Greece, Lithuania and Slovakia. It peaked at #14 on the US Hot Rock Songs chart in October 2019. In January 2021, the Recording Industry Association of America certified the song Gold.
  • Girl in Red released a sequel titled "October Passed Me By" in October 2022. That song is a post-mortem looking back at the demise of the relationship.
