Songfacts®:

  • This stripped-down ballad features Colbie Caillat lamenting over a love gone wrong.

"It's about two people that maybe let their relationship fall apart and then they think back years later on what they could have done differently and maybe they would still have been together," Caillat told People of the song. "So, it's kind of an open-ended mystery."
  • Caillat is accompanied by harmonies from bandmates Justin Kawika Young, Jason Reeves and Nelly Joy. While Caillat admits that "figuring out who does what harmony is always a little challenging depending on the song," she said, "This one, instantly, we just sang it in the room, the four of us together singing the chorus, and it kind of gave us chills and it really just fell into place easily."
  • Directed by Patrick Tracy (Dan + Shay's "Tequila"), the song's music video was filmed around Tennessee's Big East Fork Valley. We see the two couples that comprise Gone West act out the "before" and "after" of a heartbreak.
