Songfacts®:

  • Graham Nash wrote this song about his father who served time in Manchester's Strangeways prison for a theft he didn't commit. His dad never fully recovered from the experience. Nash recalled to Mojo in 2016, "Here's something ironic. I'm in Manchester singing 'Prison Song' and the show was taped. I look at the film and who do I see but the judge who sent my father to jail. I really wanted to talk to him."

  • Fari from Us West CoastThis is not the full story. The first phrase of the song is about his dad going to jail for buying a stolen camera from a friend. He could not finish the song for years until a friend of his got busted for dope. The rest of the songs is about that person who went to jail for a long time and she had the date for him to finish the song.
