Songfacts®:

  • Punk rock-star is a tough profession when you're trying to nurture a marriage, but Green Day leader Billie Joe Armstrong did it well, occasionally documenting it in songs. He and Adrienne Nesser got married in 1994, just as the band was blowing up. By 2000, they had two children together.

In this song, Armstrong takes an honest look at his lifestyle and affirms his commitment to Adrienne. "You have to compromise in every relationship," he said of the song. "There will always be problems, but you've got to find solutions, or at least try to find solutions."
  • The push-and-pull between Armstrong's work and home life manifests in the lines:

If I promise to go to church on Sunday
Will you go with me on Friday night?

Friday night is when he's likely to be on stage, but he's willing to devote Sunday to church and family, all part of the compromise.
  • This is a track from Warning, a transitional album for Green Day. It found them moving away from their punk roots and getting more introspective. The singles "Minority" and "Warning" were just minor hits, but the band wasn't concerned. They took some time off and returned in 2004 with American Idiot, a groundbreaking album that was later turned into a musical.
  • Bloodshot deadbeat and lack of sleep
    Making your mascara bleed
    Tears down your face
    Leaving traces of mistakes

The refrain was originally part of "Black Eyeliner," a demo recorded during the Nimrod sessions. It evolved into "Church on Sunday" with most of the lyrics changed and a chorus written to replace the instrumental break.

  • Walker from Waukee, IaIs there a mistake towards the end of the song? I'm talking about a point where the instruments all seem to off-time and clashing, or was that intentional?
  • Tom from Mead County, KyThis song is about billie joe and his wife tryiing to work out the problems they had, by going to church

  • Jess from Gladstone, AustraliaThis is my fave greenday song. I really love it. I am a huge fan of their older stuff like "poprocks and coke". This song is 'apparently' when Billie Joe was on drugs and his wife was telling him that if he dosen't clean up and become a better person she was leaving him. This was his plea for her to stay and that he would get clean!
  • Erik from Willow Hill, Pathat song means so much more to me now. i just thought it was a catchy little tune about a date.
  • Smope from None Ya, MdWow, I didnt know that about this song.
