Songfacts®:

  • Hockey arenas have been blasting out such Green Day hits as "Holiday" and "Know Your Enemy" for a long time, so it was a no-brainer for the NHL to go in partnership with the band. On September 30, 2019, Green Day confirmed a two-year deal with the NHL. Part of the link-up saw the band premiere "Fire, Ready, Aim" during a pump-up montage featuring NHL stars prior to the October 9, 2019 game between the Philadelphia Flyers and New Jersey Devils. The clip also included footage of Green Day performing the clap-along track in the rink.

The song continued to be the opening theme for NBCSN's Wednesday Night Hockey broadcasts throughout the 2019-2020 season.
  • Lyrically, the high-energy track finds Green Day mocking people who do stupid things without thinking.

    Ready aim fire
    Fire ready aim

The phrase "ready, aim, fire" is a command to soldiers to ensure they carefully fire their weapons. When people do daft things like shooting without aiming their guns properly first, it results in outrage. Green Day explained in the YouTube video's description: "This song is about our daily outrage. Attack without thought."
  • The song title connects to Green Day's partnership with NHL; if hockey players shoot the puck without aiming they are likely to miss the goal.
