Songfacts®:

  • Green Day close their Revolution Radio record with this acoustic-guitar ballad. "After all of the chaos that's on the album, whether it's pop culture or whatever new apps we're using, everything gets so complicated," Billie Joe Armstrong explained to Rolling Stone. "At some point you want something simple. That's sort of what 'Ordinary World' is about."
  • Armstrong originally wrote this ballad for the comedy-drama movie of the same name, where he stars as a former punk rocker turned family man. He penned it after director Lee Kirk asked him for a poignant song that his character Perry might have written.
  • Green Day teamed up with country star Miranda Lambert for a revised version of the track recorded for the group's Greatest Hits: God's Favorite Band album. The country-punk combo isn't the first collaboration between Billie Joe Armstrong and Lambert. The pair previously tribute to the late Phil Everly with an acoustic performance of the Everly Brothers' hit "When Will I Be Loved" at the 2014 Grammy Awards.
