Songfacts®:

  • This was released as the lead single from Grouplove's Big Mess album on July 15, 2016. The song is addressed to Willa Zucconi, the child of Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi, welcoming her to life. They explained to iHeartRadio:

"That is a song about this world being messed up, and dark, and a difficult place, but that it can be beautiful, and it can be your fantasy. So, let's make it that way."
  • Hannah Hooper told Fuse where the album title came from:

"We came home, our power was out, our water was off, we had been recording up in Seattle, and we had a baby, there were people doing construction work on our house. It was just like, chaos. […] We were just like 'f--k! It's a big mess!"
  • Drummer Ryan Rabin wrote the chorus and Hannah Hooper and Christian Zucconi the intro and the verses. Hooper told Radio.com: "It's an interesting collection of Grouplove brains collaborating on a song. In a lot of ways, it's like 'We're back. We got this. We're parents, we're musicians, we're lovers, we're friends, we're in this world together, let's do this!'"
  • Hannah and Christian recorded some of Willa's screams as an Easter Egg hidden in the song's mix.
  • Ryan Rabin penned his part of the song the day that Willa was born. "(He) wrote the chorus - the 'Welcome to your life, this could be your fantasy' -- in the shower while he knew that Hannah was giving birth," bassist Dan Gleason recalled to ABC Radio. "So it just kinda took those two things and they fit together, which is pretty incredible, you know? It doesn't always work like that."
