Songfacts®:

  • American singer-songwriter Guy Clark composed this song as a reaction to the press coverage of the suicide epidemic afflicting soldiers returning from the Middle East. "It felt like something that needed to be addressed," he told American Songwriter magazine. "I want it to be something you want to hear again. And a lot of times, it's not really a chorus, it's just 'desperados waiting for a train.' And that's all the chorus there is. Just that. Like how 'my favorite picture of you' is the only thing that repeats."

  • Jim from Edinburgh, Scotland Like a lot Guy Clark wrote about, this song articulates something we all need to think about a lot more deeply. My cousin fought in Afghanistan, lost friends and had some of his humanity stripped away. If this song doesn’t move and stop you, you will miss something important. RIP Guy and RIP all those brave men and women Guy loved and we should too
