Songfacts®:

  • This breathy pop song finds Danielle Haim talking about a beef with a friend. She explained to The Guardian the "friend" is herself - she feels stuck in a dark hole and is at odds with her own mind. "It was gnarly and I was not OK with myself," Danielle said.
  • Danielle expanded on the song's inspiration in an Instagram post. The Haim lead vocalist explained she was describing the emotion she feels when in the thick of depression. She recalls being too down to leave the house after "being constantly on the go" for a couple of years.

Locking all the doors to my house
    I'm alone in my head

Danielle added that as she gets older it become slightly easier to recognize the symptoms of depression and get help.

Something in the way that I felt when I woke up
Told me that I shouldn't give in, give up hope
Told me that I shouldn't fight what I felt
  • Musically, this multi-layered track is completely different to Haim's previous single, the sunny, horn-laden "Summer Girl." Danielle Haim explained the track's chaotic vibe is intended to represent her mind at the time. "I'm spiraling. fast-talking to myself - words jumbled up. heartbeat racing," she said. "These times are hard to forget and even harder to work through."
  • Danielle Haim wrote the song with her sisters Alana and Este, her romantic partner, Ariel Rechtshaid, and her friend Rostam Batmanglij, formerly of Vampire Weekend. She also co-produced the song along with Rechtshaid and Batmanglij.
  • The song's music video was directed by Haim's longtime collaborator Paul Thomas Anderson. It primarily focuses on Danielle going through the dreary motions of everyday life until her sisters rescue her.
  • This is one of three songs on Women in Music Pt. III inspired by a depression that struck Danielle after Haim wrapped up touring their Something to Tell You album. The other two tracks are "I Know Alone" and "I've Been Down."
