Songfacts®:

  • Vultures are scavengers who feed on the carcases of dead animals. In this song, Lzzy Hale uses these birds as a metaphor for the critics waiting for her to fail. Instead of feeling defeated, she is empowered, determined to prove them wrong.
  • Halestorm debuted this song at the opening show of its Canadian co-headlining tour with Stone Sour on January 27, 2018 at Abbotsford Entertainment And Sports Center in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The song was released as their second single from Vicious on June 22, 2018.
  • The song originated when Halestorm were traveling to the studio wondering what they were going to write about. Inspiration struck when they spotted a bunch of vultures who were chewing on something. Guitarist Joe Hottinger recalled to Louder Sound:

"We thought, 'Black Vultures! That's a good title!' Something's about to die, or they think something is about to die, and from our prospective we were thinking, 'We're not dead, mother---ers!'"
