This song ties in closely with the concept that runs throughout Into the Wild Life. Guitarist Joe Hottinger explained to TeamRock: "Sick Individual, again, is about doing whatever the f--k you want. That's the main theme of this record, and also one of the main ones of how we live our life."
Halestorm's producer Jay Joyce wanted to capture the energy of the band's live shows on Into the Wild Life. Hottinger recalled: "He (Joyce) wanted you to hear Arejay (Hale, drums) the way you see him when we play live. And he knew exactly where and how to f--k up a song in the right way. He'd say to Arejay, 'Why don't you just go crazy for a second.' And that's what you hear in the drum intro. Then he'd say, 'You guys just write a riff; something big and heavy.' And that's the Sabbath-y riff that you hear."
